How do short track skaters qualify for the final?

B · Beginner · The races · 2 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

A distance runs through rounds such as heats, quarter-finals and semi-finals to two finals: the Final, which decides the medals, and the Final B. Race winners and set places go through, with the fastest next-placed skaters filling spaces. A skater impeded while in a qualifying place, by someone who is sanctioned, is advanced by the referee.

How it works

  • Rounds: from preliminaries to quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.
  • Race size: five in 500 m and 1000 m quarters, semis and finals; seven in the 1500 m semis and final.
  • Going through: race winners and set finishing places.
  • Fastest losers: may fill up the next round.
  • Advancement: for a skater impeded in a qualifying place by a sanctioned skater.
  • Repechage: a second chance at championships.
  • Final and Final B: the Final decides the medals.
  • Final B of one: not skated; the skater is placed.

Tricky cases

A skater in third place, outside the qualifying places, is knocked over. Advanced?

No. Only skaters in a direct qualifying place are advanced.

Can the referee advance a skater for other reasons?

Yes, at their discretion, if the skater was prevented from qualifying through no action of their own.

Why are there more skaters in a 1500 m final?

The rules set seven for the 1500 m semi-finals and final, against five for the shorter distances.

Where must skaters wait before a race?

In the heat box; a skater who does not report is a DNS.

Why the rule exists

Advancing impeded skaters stops a foul from ending a fair contender's event. Fixed race sizes keep finals safe and readable.
