What equipment rules apply in speed skating?

Checked 14 October 2026

Racing suits must follow the natural shape of the body, with no added forms. Skates may move freely on the shoe, as clap skates do, but must use only the skater's own effort, and blades may not be heated. Radios and music players are banned while racing. A confirmed foul disqualifies a skater from that distance.

How it works

  • Suits: follow the body; no shaping inserts.
  • Protection: shin guards and knee pads inside the suit; helmet and neck protection allowed.
  • Skates: any shoe-to-blade hinge, as long as it is safe.
  • Energy: only from the skater; no heated blades.
  • No devices: no communication or music equipment while racing.
  • Transponders: on both ankles, if required.
  • Foul: disqualification from that distance.
  • Intentional foul: the referee may bar the skater from the rest of the event.

The glossary has the equipment (long track), the clap skate, the skate, the armband, the disqualification and the protests.

Tricky cases

Are clap skates allowed?

Yes. The rules allow the shoe to move relative to the blade.

Can a skater warm their blades before a race?

No. Heating blades by any external source is not permitted.

A skater gets a yellow card for conduct. What happens?

They are suspended from the field of play for the day.

Does one foul cost the whole championship?

Only if the referee rules it intentional; otherwise it costs that distance.

Why the rule exists

Suit and skate rules keep speed coming from the skater, not hidden technology. Banning radios stops coaching during a race.
