What do shotgun shooters have to wear?

Checked 14 October 2026

Athletes must wear a shooting vest or jacket with side pockets for cartridges, sports clothing and closed shoes. A bib number is worn on the back above the waist. Jeans, camouflage, sleeveless tops and open-toed shoes are not allowed. In skeet the vest also carries the yellow marker tape.

How it works

  • The vest: sleeveless, or a jacket with long sleeves, with side pockets for the ammunition. It must be worn on the field of play when ready to shoot.
  • Allowed: sports trousers, training suits, sports blouses, skirts and dresses. Shorts or skirts ending no more than 15 cm above the centre of the kneecap.
  • Not allowed: blue jeans or similar trousers in non-sporting colours; see-through clothing; camouflage; shirts with sleeves shorter than 10 cm or none; open-toed or open-heeled shoes; shooting barefoot or in socks.
  • The bib number: on the back, above the waist, at all times in training and competition. Without it the athlete may not start or continue.
  • Name and nation: the nation's IOC abbreviation and the athlete's family name across the back of the shoulders, above the bib number.
  • Blinders: plastic side blinders up to 60 mm deep are permitted for shotgun athletes. So is a front blinder up to 30 mm wide.
  • Heated clothing: battery-heated clothes may be worn with the approval of the equipment control jury.
  • Skeet vests: must not be made of stretch fabric or have anything that adjusts the fit, so that the marker tape stays where it was checked.
  • Counting aids: accessories or devices used to help count targets are prohibited.

Tricky cases

Can an athlete shoot in a T-shirt with no vest in hot weather?

No. All athletes must wear an appropriate shooting vest or jacket when on the field of play and ready to shoot.

Can an athlete shoot in sandals?

No. Open-toed or open-heeled shoes and sandals are not allowed.

An athlete forgets the bib number. Can they shoot and fetch it later?

No. If the bib number is not worn, the athlete may not start or continue.

Why the rule exists

The dress code is about how the sport looks to spectators and on television, and the rule book says so by asking for "a sports look". The bib number and name let officials and viewers tell athletes apart from behind, which is the side they are seen from.
