How does the 25 m pistol final work?
I · Intermediate · Finals and ties · 6 of 7The final is ten rapid fire series of five shots, scored as hits and misses from zero. A shot scoring 10.2 or better is a hit. The lowest scorer goes out after the fourth series and one more after each series that follows, until the tenth decides gold and silver.
How it works
- A series: five shots in the rapid fire sequence of the qualification, one shot for each showing of the green light, from the ready position each time.
- Hit or miss: "Any shot scoring 10.2 or higher on the 25m Rapid-Fire Pistol target counts as a hit."
- No precision stage: the final has rapid fire series only.
- Before the start: two minutes of preparation, then one sighting series of five shots.
- Loading: one "LOAD" command before the sighting series. After that finalists load magazines as they need them.
- The commands: "READY", then "ATTENTION" 20 seconds later with the red lights. The green lights follow after 7 seconds.
- Who goes out:
- after 4 series, 8th place;
- after 5 series, 7th place;
- after 6 series, 6th place;
- after 7 series, 5th place;
- after 8 series, 4th place;
- after 9 series, 3rd place, the bronze medal;
- after 10 series, silver and gold.
- Ties: athletes tied for a place to be decided fire extra five-shot series until the tie is broken.
- Ready position: no warning. A fault costs two hits in that series and a second fault means disqualification.
- A shot before the green light: scored as a miss, with one more hit taken off the series.
- Malfunction: one may be claimed. If it is allowable the athlete completes the series at once while the others wait.
The most a finalist can score is 50 hits.
Tricky cases
A shot scores 10.0. Is it a hit?
No. A hit needs 10.2 or better.
Two finalists are level for the place that goes out. Is it settled by qualification ranking?
No. They fire another five-shot series, and again if needed.
Does the precision stage come into the final?
No. All ten series are rapid fire.
A finalist has a second malfunction. Can they complete that series too?
No. Only one malfunction may be claimed in a final. After that the hits shown are the ones that count.
Why the rule exists
The final keeps only the half of the event that is quick to watch and easy to score. The hit zone of 10.2 sits inside the ten ring of the rapid fire target, so a shot has to be better than a bare ten to count.
