How a match works, in a minute
How a sambo bout works
- Sambo is a combat sport from Russia. Athletes win by throwing, pinning and locking joints. Sport Sambo is grappling only; Combat Sambo adds punches, kicks and chokes.
- A throw scores by how the defender lands and whether the attacker stays on their feet. Staying up while throwing a standing opponent onto the back is a perfect throw, which wins outright.
- On the ground, pinning the opponent on the back scores points by time, and a painful hold, an arm or leg lock, wins outright when the opponent taps or shouts.
- A bout also ends at once on an eight-point lead. Otherwise the athlete with more points wins.
