How the sambo world ranking works

Checked 21 October 2026Valid for: the FIAS World Ranking List (adults), under the Regulations of the FIAS World Ranking List (undated; read 2026-10-20). Official source: sambo.sport. Not covered: youth and masters (adults only take part in ranking events); which events count in a given year (the FIAS calendar).

How many points does a sambo athlete get for winning the World Championships?

1,000. FIAS gives points by event and place, and adds a small bonus for each bout won:

World Championships1,00080060040020050

Continental championships6004002001005012
Continental Cups40020010050255

The ranking covers two calendar years. Results from this year count in full, results from last year at half, and only an athlete's four best results count.

The one thing to remember: sambo ranks you on your four best results over two years, with last year's halved.

Which events count

World Championships, World Cups, continental championships and open continental Cups. Every ranking event must use the FIAS scoring system, may not be an open national championship and is for adults only. Multi-sport games (such as the Asian Games) do not count.

How many per country

EventAthletes per country per weight
World and continental championships1
World Cup2
Continental Cup4

Separate lists

Each discipline (sport sambo and combat sambo) and each weight has its own list. Points do not move between weights and are not added across disciplines. An athlete who changes citizenship in a year loses all points and starts again from zero.

Ties

Most points from World Championships, then World Cups, then continental championships, then continental Cups; then the quality of their bouts at events where all the tied athletes took part.

What the ranking is for

The draw at every ranking event takes the ranking into account, and FIAS gives commemorative prizes to the top three on the ranking.

A worked example

Made up to show the arithmetic. This year: a World Cup silver with three wins (600 + 75) and a continental gold with four wins (600 + 48). Last year: a World Championships bronze with three wins (600 + 150) and a World Cup fifth with two wins (200 + 50), halved to 375 and 125. Four best: 675 + 648 + 375 + 125 = 1,823.

Where the document is unclear

The regulations do not say whether "4 best results" means four per year or four across the two years together; the example reads it as four in all. They also do not say whether the win bonus is added on top of the place points; the example assumes it is.
