When is a penalty shot given in inline hockey?

I · Intermediate · Penalties · 4 of 5
Checked 14 October 2026

A penalty shot is given when a player in control of the puck, over the centre line with only the goalkeeper to beat, is fouled from behind and loses a fair scoring chance. The shooter starts at the centre spot and skates in alone; no rebound may be scored. If an opponent other than the goalkeeper interferes, a goal is awarded.

How it works

  • Five conditions: puck control, over centre, only the goalkeeper to beat, fouled from behind, a chance lost.
  • Everyone else: at the benches.
  • Start: puck on the centre spot, whistle.
  • Shooter: keeps the puck moving towards goal; one shot.
  • Rebounds: no goal from a rebound.
  • Goalkeeper: stays in the crease until the shooter touches the puck and crosses centre.
  • Interference: by another opponent, or a thrown stick, gives a goal.
  • After it: a minor penalty for the foul is not served.

The glossary has the penalty shot (inline hockey), the goalkeeper (inline hockey), the goal crease, the minor penalty (inline hockey), the shootout (inline hockey) and the face-off (inline hockey).

Tricky cases

The goalkeeper leaves the crease too early and the shot misses. Retake?

Yes. The shot is taken again.

The goalkeeper throws their stick at the shooter. Result?

A goal is awarded.

A team has pulled its goalkeeper when a penalty shot is given. Can the keeper return?

Yes, before the shot is taken.

Is a major penalty still served after a penalty-shot goal?

Yes, for an offence that carries a major or match penalty.

Why the rule exists

A foul from behind on a breakaway steals a goal, so the shot gives the chance back. Clear conditions keep it rare.
