How is a goal scored in inline hockey?

A goal counts when the puck, played by an attacker's stick, crosses the goal line between the posts and under the bar. It does not count if kicked, thrown or put in without a stick, or off a high stick or an official. A charge on the goalkeeper in the crease wipes out the goal.

How it works

  • Goal: the whole puck over the line, from in front, under the bar.
  • Off an attacker's stick: or deflected off a teammate.
  • Own goals: count; credited to the last attacker, no assist.
  • Not a goal: kicked, thrown or directed in other than by stick.
  • Not a goal: off a stick above the bar, or off an official.
  • Goalkeeper charged in the crease: no goal, and a major and game misconduct.
  • Assists: one, to the player who made the pass.
  • After a goal: a face-off at centre.

The glossary has the goal (inline hockey), the goal crease, the goalkeeper (inline hockey), the major penalty (inline hockey), the misconduct penalty and the face-off (inline hockey).

Tricky cases

A defender's high stick knocks the puck into their own net. Goal?

Yes. The high-stick rule applies only to attackers.

The puck goes in off an attacker's skate after a shot. Goal?

Only if it was not kicked in on purpose; a deliberate kick in does not count.

A goal is scored while an ineligible player is on the floor. Does it count?

No, and earlier goals by that team do not count either once it is found out.

Who is credited with an own goal?

The attacker who last played the puck, with no assist.

Why the rule exists

Goals off the stick reward shooting skill. Protecting the goalkeeper in the crease keeps the position safe.
