I · Intermediate · Rallies and conduct · 4 of 4
Checked 15 October 2026

A dead-ball hinder is accidental interference that denies the opponent a fair chance at the ball. Play stops and the rally is replayed from a first serve. Hinders include a court fault, a ball hitting an opponent on its way to the front wall, real body contact and backswing contact.

How it works

  • Hinder: accidental interference.
  • Result: replay, first serve.
  • Court hinder: wet spot, vent.
  • Ball hits opponent: hinder, if heading to the front wall.
  • Body contact: if it stops play.
  • Backswing: hinder.
  • Safety holdup: may be claimed.
  • Must ask: at once.

The glossary has the hinder, the dead ball hinder, the court hinder, the ball hits opponent, the backswing hinder and the safety holdup.
