How does serving work in doubles racquetball?
I · Intermediate · Serving · 3 of 4Checked 15 October 2026
In doubles each team gives the referee its serving order for the game. When the first server loses the serve it is a handout and the partner serves; when the second loses, it is a side-out. At the start of a game only one partner serves. The partner stands in the service box until the ball passes.
How it works
- Order: given to the referee.
- First server out: handout.
- Second server out: side-out.
- Game start: one server only.
- Partner: in the service box.
- Posture: back to wall, feet down.
- Out of order: points removed, out.
- Returns: either partner.
The glossary has the doubles, the order of serve (doubles), the handout, the partner's position, the out-of-order serve and the returns in doubles.
Tricky cases
The serve passes behind the partner. Result?
A screen, a fault.
Can the order change between games?
Yes.
I hit my partner with a return. Result?
We lose the rally.
Is it a hinder if my partner blocks me?
No.
Why the rule exists
Fixing the partner in the box keeps them out of the serve's path.
