Who makes line calls in pickleball?
I · Intermediate · Serving and rallies · 4 of 5Checked 15 October 2026
Players call the lines on their own end, by voice or hand signal, after the ball lands. A ball touching a line is in, except a serve on the non-volley zone line. A ball that cannot be called out at once is in, and a doubtful call goes to the opponent. In refereed play, rally-ending shots may be appealed to the referee.
How it works
- Who: players, own end.
- How: voice or signal.
- Line: in.
- Serve on kitchen line: out.
- Doubt: opponent's favour.
- Override: a player may overrule own side.
- Appeal: rally-ending shots only.
- Line judges: take over their lines.
The glossary has the line call, the in and out, the challenging the call, the referee appeal, the line judge and the non-officiated play.
Tricky cases
My partner calls out, I think it was in. Result?
The ball is in.
Can I appeal a call mid-rally?
No. Only rally-ending shots.
The referee saw it land in. Can they overrule?
Yes, and must.
Who calls the centreline with line judges?
The players on that end.
Why the rule exists
Giving doubt to the opponent keeps self-called matches fair.
