What weapons are used in pencak silat jurus?
I · Intermediate · Jurus · 6 of 7Tunggal and ganda use the golok, a broad knife, and the toya, a staff. For juniors and seniors the golok is 30 to 40 cm long and the toya 150 to 180 cm. Ganda adds one traditional Nusantara weapon such as the keris or celurit, and tunggal bebas chooses from 17. All blades must be blunt and are checked before the event.
How it works
- Golok (juniors, seniors): 30 to 40 cm long, 2.5 to 4 cm wide.
- Toya (juniors, seniors): 150 to 180 cm long, 2.5 to 3.5 cm thick.
- Younger groups: shorter golok and toya.
- Blades: blunt and not pointed.
- Ganda: one extra Nusantara weapon.
- Tunggal bebas: 15 listed weapons plus golok and stick.
- Inspection: announced at least 30 minutes before the event.
- Quarantine: certified weapons collected only when the name is called.
The glossary has the golok and toya, the Nusantara weapons, the weapon inspection, the ganda, the tunggal and the jurus disqualification.
Tricky cases
A golok blade comes loose mid-routine. What happens?
Disqualification: a weapon coming loose from its handle or breaking ends the performance.
May ganda weapons clash and spark?
Yes, as long as the blades are blunt.
Holding the golok by the metal. Any cost?
Jurors must mark firmness down, and the council can ask them to correct a high score.
Can a pesilat bring a weapon that was not inspected?
No. Failing inspection means disqualification.
Why the rule exists
Set sizes keep routines comparable, and blunt blades keep performers safe. Inspection and quarantine stop weapons being swapped after the check.
