How is jurus scored in pencak silat?
I · Intermediate · Jurus · 7 of 7Ten jurors score each performance between 9.00 and 10.00, and the system takes the median. In tunggal and regu they judge wrong movements and firmness; in ganda and tunggal bebas, technique, firmness and soulfulness. The higher of red and blue goes through. Ties go to fewer penalties, time nearest 3 minutes, then lower spread of scores.
How it works
- Jurors: ten for every jurus event.
- Scale: 9.00 to 10.00.
- Result: the median of the jurors' scores.
- Tunggal and regu: wrong movements and firmness.
- Ganda and tunggal bebas: technique, firmness, soulfulness.
- Penalties: recorded by the council.
- Tie-breaks: fewer penalties, time nearest 3 minutes, lower standard deviation.
- Last resort: a vote of the chairman and ten jurors.
The glossary has the jurus score, the firmness score, the ganda and tunggal bebas scoring, the jurus tie-break, the jurors and the Referee-Jury Council.
Tricky cases
Is the median the same as dropping the highest and lowest?
No. The median takes the middle value of all ten scores.
Who records penalties?
The council, not the jurors.
Both teams tie on score, penalties and time. Next?
The lower standard deviation of the jurors' scores wins.
When does judging start?
At the first gong; in ganda and tunggal bebas it ends at the last movement on the synopsis.
Why the rule exists
The median stops one unusually high or low juror deciding the result. A lower spread of scores breaks ties because it shows the jurors agreed.
