How the para shooting world rankings work

Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: World Shooting Para Sport (WSPS) world and regional rankings under the WSPS Technical Rules and Regulations 2026, rule 2.18 (pages 18 to 21). Official source: ipc's WSPS pages (paralympic.org). Not covered: the LA28 Paralympic quota system; classification.

World Shooting Para Sport ranks shooters in each event (for example R1, men's 10m air rifle standing SH1) by performance points from each competition:

Performance points = rank points × competition weight × (qualification score ÷ world record)

  • Rank points: points for your place in qualification (11 for 1st down to 1 for 9th and below) plus points for your place in the final (50 for 1st down to 12 for 8th).
  • Competition weight: Paralympic Games 10, World Championships 8, World Cup 6, Grand Prix 2.
  • Qualification score ÷ world record: how close your qualification score was to the world record.

Points from the Paralympics and World Championships last two years; others last one year.

India's para shooters (Avani Lekhara, Manish Narwal and others) compete in these events.

Value A: rank points

PlaceQualification (A1)Final (A2)
11150
21040
3930
4820
5718
6616
7514
8412
9 and below10

A = A1 + A2. A shooter who reaches the final but does not start it gets A2 = 0. In events with no final (non- Paralympic events), A2 = 0 for everyone.

Value B: competition weight

CompetitionBPoints last
Paralympic Games102 years
World Championships82 years
World Cup (WSPS sanctioned)61 year
Regional games or championships (regional rankings only)61 year
Grand Prix (WSPS approved)21 year

The Asian Para Games counts as regional games: its points go into the Asian regional ranking, not the world ranking.

Value C: score against the world record

C = qualification score ÷ the world record in that event as at 1 January of the competition year. Regional rankings use the world record too.

Performance points

A × B × C, rounded to two decimals. Only shooters with a WSPS licence and a confirmed (or under review) sport class count.

A worked example

Made up to show the arithmetic. At a World Cup, an Indian shooter qualifies 2nd (A1 = 10) and wins the final (A2 = 50). A = 60. B = 6. Their qualification score is 627.0 and the world record on 1 January was 634.0: C = 627.0 ÷ 634.0 = 0.98896.

Performance points = 60 × 6 × 0.98896 = 356.03.

The same result at the Paralympic Games (B = 10) would be worth 593.38.

Gaps and disagreements

  • 2.18.2 says the ranking covers results from one year back "to the day", but 2.18.5.1 keeps Paralympic and World Championship points for two years.
  • The rules say shooters are ranked by "their performance points" but not whether these are added up over all competitions in the window or only the best one counts.
  • 2.19.7 says world records are set "in the final", while Value C divides a qualification score by "the world record". If a final record is on a different scale from qualification scores, C could be misleading; the separate "qualification record" may be meant.
