What happens when a Muay Thai fighter commits a foul?

I · Intermediate · Fouls and safety · 4 of 4
Checked 14 October 2026

For a minor foul the referee gives a caution, often without stopping; three of the same caution make a warning. A warning stops the fight, and judges who agree take a point. Three warnings mean disqualification, and a serious foul can bring disqualification at once. Biting or head-butting can also bring bans after the event.

How it works

  • Caution: for minor fouls; three of one kind make a warning.
  • Warning: the fight is stopped and the foul shown.
  • Point:
  • Strike-by-strike: a warning gives five points to the opponent.
  • Three warnings: disqualification.
  • Serious foul: disqualification with or without a warning.
  • Seconds: an athlete can be penalised for their second's fouls.
  • After the event: suspensions of about 6 to 9 months and fines.

The glossary has the caution, the warning (Muay Thai), the disqualification (Muay Thai), the fouls (Muay Thai), the second (Muay Thai) and the strike-by-strike scoring.

Tricky cases

After a warning, can the referee caution for the same foul?

No. The next one for that foul must be a warning.

Many different minor fouls. What then?

The referee may warn for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The referee misses a foul. Can they ask the judges?

Yes.

Can a disqualified athlete keep an earlier medal?

Not from that stage of the competition, unless the Executive Committee rules otherwise.

Why the rule exists

Graded penalties let the referee match the response to the foul. Bans after the event deal with dangerous acts that one disqualification does not.
