How long is an F1 race?

B · Beginner · The Formula 1 weekend · 3 of 6
Checked 15 October 2026

A race is the fewest complete laps covering more than 305 km, or 260 km at Monaco. If two hours pass first, the leader gets the flag at the end of the next lap; a suspension adds its time, up to three hours in all. Cars with under 90% of the winner's laps are not classified.

How it works

  • Distance: over 305 km.
  • Monaco: 260 km.
  • Time limit: two hours.
  • With suspension: three hours in all.
  • Winner: first across the line.
  • Classification: laps, then order.
  • Below 90%: not classified.
  • After the flag: to parc fermé.

The glossary has the race, the chequered flag, the classification, the DNF, the lap and the parc fermé.

Tricky cases

The race reaches two hours on lap 50. When does it end?

At the end of the next lap.

A car stops on the last lap. Is it classified?

Yes, if it covered 90% of the winner's laps.

Can the winner celebrate on the slowing-down lap?

Yes, if safe.

Why is Monaco shorter?

The rules set 260 km there.

Why the rule exists
