How are F1 points awarded?

B · Beginner · The Formula 1 weekend · 4 of 6
Checked 15 October 2026

The top ten in a race score 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1, with no point for the fastest lap. Fewer points are given if the leader covered under 75% of the distance. The drivers' title goes on total points; ties are broken by most wins, then most seconds.

How it works

  • Race points: 25 to 1, top ten.
  • Sprint points: 8 to 1, top eight.
  • Fastest lap: no point.
  • Short race: fewer points.
  • Two green laps: needed for points.
  • Drivers' title: total points.
  • Ties: most wins, seconds and so on.
  • Constructors: both cars count.

The glossary has the points system, the Drivers' Championship, the Constructors' Championship, the competition number, the season and the sprint.

Tricky cases

No.

A race is stopped after one lap and not restarted. Points?

None.

Two drivers tie on points and wins. Next?

Most second places.

Who may use number 1?

The reigning champion.

Why the rule exists
