How does a Formula 1 race weekend work?

B · Beginner · The Formula 1 weekend · 1 of 6
Checked 15 October 2026

A Formula 1 season has up to 24 Grands Prix. A standard weekend has three practice sessions, qualifying to set the grid and a race of a little over 305 km on the third day. Sprint weekends swap two practice sessions for a sprint and its own qualifying. Points from every race decide the titles.

How it works

  • Season: 8 to 24 rounds.
  • Teams: two cars each.
  • Practice: three hours.
  • Qualifying: sets the grid.
  • Race: over 305 km.
  • Sprint weekends: one practice, a sprint.
  • Titles: drivers and constructors.
  • Rules: FIA Sections A and B.

The glossary has the Grand Prix, the season, the standard format weekend, the sprint weekend, the race and the Drivers' Championship.
