How long is a karate kumite bout?

B · Beginner · The bout · 2 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

A senior bout lasts three minutes of fighting time, with the clock stopped whenever the referee halts the action. It ends early if one athlete leads by eight points. At time, the higher score wins. If the scores are level, the athlete holding senshu wins, and failing that the panel decides.

How it works

  • Seniors and under 21: three minutes of effective time.
  • Cadets and juniors: two minutes.
  • Under 14: one and a half minutes.
  • The clock: starts on the referee's signal and stops each time the referee calls "Yame" or two judges signal a score.
  • Fifteen seconds to go: one short burst of the buzzer.
  • Time up: two short bursts. That signal ends the bout.
  • Eight-point lead: the bout is over at once.
  • At time: the athlete with more points wins.
  • A technique on the buzzer: valid if it landed as time ran out.
  • Rest: between bouts, an athlete is entitled to a rest equal to the length of a bout.

The glossary has the bout, the eight-point lead, the senshu, the hantei, the ato shibaraku and the referee's calls.

Tricky cases

A kick lands as the buzzer sounds. Does it count?

Yes. A correctly executed technique landed at the moment time runs out is valid. One executed after the time-up signal is not.

The score reaches 8-0 with two minutes left. Does the bout go on?

No. A lead of eight points or more ends the bout.

Can organisers shorten bouts?

Yes, in tournaments open to unlimited entries. Elimination bouts may be cut from three minutes to two, or from two to one and a half, if this is announced beforehand.

Does a three-minute bout take three minutes?

No. The clock stops for every halt, so a bout takes longer than its fighting time.

Why the rule exists

Three minutes of fighting time is long enough for tactics to matter and short enough to keep the pace high. The eight-point rule ends a one-sided bout before the weaker athlete is exposed to more risk. Stopping the clock at each halt means the full time is spent fighting.
