How to qualify in Karate
How karateka qualify for the Karate World Championships
The Karate World Championships is no longer open to every country's best. Since this cycle it has a two-year qualification period and 32 places in each category, with at most one karateka per country in each.
The categories are kata (one for women, one for men) and kumite (five weight classes each for women and men).
The 32 places in each category:
| Route | Places |
|---|---|
| 1. Karate World Championships Standing (a ranking of Karate 1 Premier League and continental results): the top 11 | 11 |
| 2. Continental championships: gold, silver and the higher-ranked bronze in Asia, Europe, Pan America and Africa (3 each); gold and silver in Oceania (2) | 14 |
| 3. The host: its highest-ranked karateka | 1 |
| 4. A closed Qualification Tournament: 6 winners | 6 |
| Total | 32 |
Places are given by name: a country cannot pass one to another athlete.
For India, the continental route is the Asian Karate Federation (AKF) championships: a top-three finish (the higher-ranked bronze medallist gets the third place) earns a place, unless another Indian already holds one through the standing.
The standing
The Karate World Championships Standing counts:
- Karate 1 Premier League results;
- continental championships (both in the period count for points);
- half the points from the previous individual World Championships, carried in at the start.
It is closed on 1 August 2027. Only events before that date count. If a continental championships comes later, the places go to the most recent continental championships before 1 August 2027.
One per country
A continental place is valid only if no other karateka from the same country is in the top 11 of the standing. The highest-ranked karateka from that country in the top 11 always has priority.
The Qualification Tournament
A closed event for national federations, awarding 6 named places per category:
- a country can enter one karateka per category, and only in categories where it has no qualifier yet;
- groups of 3 to 6 play round-robin, with no seeding; the knockout ends in six "qualification bouts", whose six winners qualify;
- one refugee athlete may enter each category.
Para karate athletes do not play the Qualification Tournament: para karate is open to direct entry, up to three per country.
The Championships format
A round-robin group phase, then knockout with no repechage. Each category gives one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Para karate
Six categories: visually impaired (K10), intellectually impaired (K21, K22) and wheelchair users (K30), for women and men.
Where the documents disagree
- The Qualification Tournament document lists "the reigning World Champion" as an allocation route; the main 2027 document does not.
- The main document says a continental place is valid only if no athlete from the same country "has not entered the first 1 places" of the standing: it means "has entered the first 11 places".
