What happens if a karate bout ends level?
I · Intermediate · Scoring · 5 of 10If a bout ends level and nobody holds senshu, the athlete with more ippons wins, then the one with more waza-aris. If those are equal too, the referee and the four judges vote, which is called hantei. An individual elimination bout must have a winner. In round-robin and team bouts a draw is declared.
How it works
- First: senshu.
- Second: the higher number of ippons scored in the bout.
- Third: the higher number of waza-aris.
- Last: hantei, a majority vote of the four judges and the referee.
- What they vote on: which athlete showed superiority of tactics and techniques.
- The procedure: the referee moves to the edge of the area, calls "Hantei" and blows the whistle. The judges then signal.
- Elimination bouts: cannot be a tie.
- Round-robin and team bouts: a tie, hikiwake, is declared, with no vote.
- Team match still level: an extra bout, which can go to hantei.
The glossary has the hantei, the senshu, the ippon, the waza-ari, the judges and the referee.
Tricky cases
A bout ends 0-0 in an elimination round. Is there extra time?
No. With no score and no senshu there are no ippons or waza-aris to count, so the panel decides by hantei.
A bout ends 3-3: one ippon against three yukos, and neither has senshu. Who wins?
The athlete with the ippon. The higher number of ippons is the first criterion after senshu.
Can a round-robin bout end in a draw?
Yes. The referee announces hikiwake. A draw in which points were scored is worth one victory point to each athlete. A draw with no scores is worth none.
How many people vote in hantei?
Five: the four judges and the referee, each on their own judgement.
Why the rule exists
The order of the tie-break follows the sport's values: first the initiative, then the hardest techniques and only then opinion. Five voters cannot split evenly, so a vote always produces a winner. Draws are allowed where a table of results can absorb them.
