Can players argue with the referee in football?
A · Advanced · Yellow cards, red cards and misconduct · 3 of 12Players may talk to the referee, but dissent (protesting a decision by word or action) is a yellow card, and offensive or abusive language is a red. Under the "only the captain" guidelines, only one player from each team, usually the captain, may approach the referee after key decisions. These become compulsory for competitions starting on or after 1 July 2027.
How it works
- Normal conversation with the referee is allowed.
- Dissent by word or action is a caution.
- Offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures is a sending-off.
- Under the "only the captain" guidelines:
- only one player per team, usually the captain, approaches the referee after key incidents, and respectfully;
- other players who approach or surround the referee may be cautioned;
- the referee explains important decisions to the captain;
- if the captain is the goalkeeper, another player is named at the coin toss to do this.
- In youth, veterans, disability and grassroots football, the referee can mark a 4-metre captain-only zone around themselves.
Tricky cases
Is the captain allowed to argue with the referee?
No. The captain may approach respectfully to hear an explanation. A captain who shows dissent is cautioned like anyone else.
Does the captain have any special powers?
No. The captain has no special status under the Laws, only some responsibility for the team's behaviour.
Why the rule exists
Mobbing referees harms the game and is intimidating. Talking through one captain keeps communication open and calm.
