The bout

  1. What happens when a fencer steps off the piste?Off the end with both feet, and a hit is scored against the fencer.
  2. How does a fencing team match work?A relay to 45.

The weapons

  1. What happens when both fencers hit each other at the same time?It depends on the weapon.
  2. Where can you hit in foil, and what happens if you hit somewhere else?Only the trunk: the front and back of the torso down to the groin, plus the lower part of the mask's bib.
  3. How is épée different from the other fencing weapons?Everything is target, from the mask to the toes.
  4. What are the special rules of sabre?Sabre is the only weapon that scores with a cut as well as a thrust.

Conduct and refereeing

  1. What do the yellow, red and black cards mean in fencing?Yellow is a warning.
  2. How do video reviews work in fencing?The fencer on the piste can ask the referee to review a decision on video.
