How does a BMX freestyle competition get from a full entry list to a winner?

In phases. Everyone rides a qualification, and the top scores go on to the final. Only a field of more than 31 riders has a semi-final in between. Park riders are grouped in heats of four to six. In the later phases the start order is reversed, so the best qualifier rides last.

How it works

  • Phases: qualification and final, with a semi-final for the largest fields.
  • Park heats: "a heat is a group which comprises 4-6 riders".
  • 5 to 8 entries: the top four in qualification go to the final.
  • 9 to 15 entries: the top eight go to the final, in two heats of four.
  • 16 to 31 entries: the top twelve go to the final, in two heats of six.
  • More than 31 entries: the top 24 go to a semi-final, and the top twelve of those to the final.
  • Flatland: riders are not put into heats. With three or four entries there is only a final. Larger fields have a qualification, and the largest a semi-final as well.
  • Qualification order: random. At the world championships or an event in a series it follows the ranking in reverse, with the highest-ranked riders in the last heat.
  • Later phases: "the start order is in reverse order of the results" of the phase before.
  • Late for a semi-final or final: a rider not in the field of play or the riders' area by the start of the warm-up does not start.
  • Categories: Men Elite and Women Elite, both aged 15 and over, at international events. National events add Amateur and Youth, with Youth for ages 7 to 14.
  • Minimum numbers: a park category needs five riders and a flatland category three.

The glossary has the park, flatland and the run.

Tricky cases

Is there always a semi-final?

No. In the park there is one only when more than 31 riders enter.

Does the best qualifier ride first in the final?

No. The final runs in reverse order of the preceding phase, so the best qualifier rides last.

Can a 14-year-old ride in the elite category?

No. Men Elite and Women Elite are for riders aged 15 and over. Age is counted as the year of the event minus the year of birth.

Can a rider enter Amateur at one event and Elite at the next?

No. A rider cannot take part in both the Amateur and Elite categories during the same season.

Why the rule exists

Scaling the phases to the entry keeps the number of runs manageable while giving every rider two runs to qualify. Reversing the order saves the best riders for last, which builds the contest towards its end and lets the leaders ride knowing the score to beat.
