How does team chess work?

In team chess two teams meet in a match made up of several separate games, one on each board, all played at the same time. Each game is ordinary chess between two players. The results are added up to decide the match. At the Chess Olympiad a team is four players and one reserve.

How it works

  • A team competition: one "where the results of individual games contribute equally to the final score of a defined group of players".
  • Each game: is played under the Laws of Chess, like any other.
  • Chess Olympiad team: four players plus one reserve, in both the open and the women's sections.
  • Boards: numbered from one. Board one is the team's first board.
  • A captain: every team has one, who may also be one of the players.
  • Format at the Olympiad: a Swiss system over 11 rounds, so teams with similar scores meet each other.
  • No repeat matches: no team plays the same opponent twice.
  • Time control at the Olympiad: 90 minutes for 40 moves, then 30 minutes for the rest, with 30 seconds added each move from move one.

The glossary has the board, the Swiss system, the time control, the increment, the scoring and the FIDE body.

Tricky cases

Can teammates discuss their games with each other during the match?

No. Each game is still governed by the Laws of Chess, which forbid advice. Players in other games must not speak about or interfere in a game.

Does a win on board one count for more than a win on board four?

No. The results of the individual games "contribute equally" to the team score.

Are all team events four boards?

No. The number of boards and reserves is set by each event. Four plus one reserve is the Chess Olympiad's rule.

Is there a separate women's event at the Olympiad?

Yes. The main competition is held in two sections, open and women. A federation's two results are combined for a separate trophy.

Why the rule exists

Chess is a contest of one against one, and a team match keeps it that way: nobody may help a teammate. What the team format adds is a shared result. A draw that is poor for one player can be exactly what the team needs, and that changes how every board is played.
