How to qualify in Chess

How a player qualifies to play for the World Chess Championship

Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: the FIDE World Championship cycle: the Regulations for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026, the Regulations for the FIDE World Championship Match 2026, and the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2028: Qualification paths and its women's version (approved by the FIDE Council, announced 14 July 2026). Not covered: how players qualify for the World Cup, Grand Swiss and Total Chess Tour themselves; how the FIDE Circuit is scored; rapid, blitz and other world championships.

The World Chess Champion defends the title in a match against one challenger. The challenger is the winner of the Candidates Tournament, an eight-player, double round-robin (14 rounds) event.

So "qualifying for the World Championship" means qualifying for the Candidates. For the next cycle, the Candidates Tournament 2028, eight places come from four routes, two each:

RoutePlaces
FIDE Grand Swiss 2027: 1st and 2nd2
Total Chess World Championship Tour 2026-27: 1st and 2nd2
FIDE World Cup 2027: the two finalists2
FIDE Circuit 2026-27 (two years of results): the best two not yet qualified2

The women's cycle is built the same way, with the Women's Grand Prix Series in place of the Total Chess Tour.

Where things stand (October 2026): India's Gukesh D is World Champion. He defends the title against Javokhir Sindarov (Uzbekistan), winner of the Candidates 2026, in Geneva from 22 November to 13 December 2026.

What changed for 2028

The FIDE Council made four changes from the 2026 cycle:

Candidates 2026Candidates 2028
World Cup3 places (1st, 2nd, 3rd)2 places (the finalists)
Rating1 place (highest six-month average rating)removed
FIDE Circuit1 place each year (2024 and 2025)2 places on the combined 2026-27 standings
Grand Swiss2 places2 places
Total Chess World Championship Tour-2 places (new)

When a qualifier is already in

Each route has its own replacement order. In general:

  • Grand Swiss: if the 1st or 2nd is the World Champion (as of 1 May 2027), 3rd place gets the spot.
  • Total Chess Tour and World Cup: if one of the top two is the World Champion or already qualified, the spot goes to the 3rd-placed player there, if not yet qualified; otherwise to the best unqualified player on the FIDE Circuit. If both are, one spot goes to the next unqualified player at that event and the other to the Circuit.
  • World Cup, extreme case: if all four semi-finalists are already in, the spot goes to the highest-rated quarter-finalist at the start of the World Cup.
  • Withdrawals from the Candidates are replaced by the best unqualified player on the FIDE Circuit 2026-27.

The Candidates Tournament

From the 2026 regulations: eight players, 14 rounds (each plays each other twice), 120 minutes for 40 moves then 30 minutes with 30 seconds a move from move 41. No draws by agreement before Black's 40th move. The winner qualifies for the World Championship match. A tie for first is settled by a playoff.

The World Championship match 2026

If either player withdraws, the replacements in order are Anish Giri (2nd in the Candidates 2026), Fabiano Caruana (3rd), then the highest-rated player on the September 2026 list with at least 50 rated games over the year before.

How the 2026 Candidates was filled (for comparison)

Eight places: FIDE Circuit 2024 winner (1); Grand Swiss 2025 top two (2); World Cup 2025 top three (3); FIDE Circuit 2025 winner (1); and the highest six-month average rating from August 2025 to January 2026, with at least 40 rated games (1).

Where the document disagrees with itself

In the 2028 open qualification paths, Path C(b) speaks of players who "have already qualified for the FIDE Women's Candidates Tournament 2028": a copying slip from the women's document.
