Can chess players agree a draw in a team match?
I · Intermediate · Captains, results and disputes · 3 of 4Yes,
How it works
- The Olympiad limit: "The players cannot draw a game by mutual agreement before black's 30th move."
- What is still allowed before move 30: a draw claim for threefold repetition, and stalemate.
- From move 30: the normal procedure for offering a draw applies.
- Asking the captain: under the General Regulations for Competitions a player "can also ask his captain if he may offer or accept a draw".
- How to ask: through the arbiter, like any other word between player and captain.
- No more than yes or no: the captain must not discuss the position.
- Event rules decide: the Laws let any event restrict draw agreements.
The glossary has the draw offer, the draw, the repetition and fifty-move rule, the stalemate, the arbiter and the notation.
Tricky cases
The position repeats three times on move 18 at the Olympiad. Can the player claim a draw?
Yes. A claim for threefold repetition is permitted before Black's 30th move.
Two Olympiad players shake hands on a draw at move 20 with no repetition. Does it stand?
No. A draw by mutual agreement is not available before Black's 30th move.
A player's team is leading 2-1 and the player has a level position. Can they ask the captain whether to take a draw?
Yes, where the event follows the General Regulations for Competitions on this point. The player asks through the arbiter.
Can the captain offer a draw to the opposing player on the team's behalf?
No. Only the player can offer or accept a draw in their own game. The captain must not intervene in a game in any other way.
Why the rule exists
In a team match a quick draw on one board can be a tactic that has nothing to do with the position. The 30-move limit makes players play real games. Letting a player consult the captain recognises that the right result on one board depends on the others.
