Are there world records in canoe sprint?
A · Advanced · The competition · 4 of 4They are called world best times. The fastest times are recorded officially, to a hundredth of a second, at the Olympic Games, world championships, World Cups and continental championships. A time counts only if the start system, timing, photo finish, course and wind measurement are all approved by the ICF and the wind is within limits.
How it works
- What is kept: "The fastest race times will be recorded officially and included in the World Best Times (WB) list".
- Where they can be set: Olympic Games, world championships, World Cups, multi-sport games and continental and regional championships.
- Format: minutes, seconds and hundredths.
- Conditions: an ICF-recognised start system, timing system, photo-finish camera and course. A recognised wind measuring device must show the wind "within the wind parameter determined by the ICF".
- Age groups: junior (under 18) and senior only.
- Which events: only those on the world championship programme that year.
- Validation: the organisers or timing providers send a new best time to the ICF within 7 days.
- Equal times: boats that achieve the same best time hold it jointly.
The glossary has sprint racing and the photo finish.
Tricky cases
Does a very fast time with a strong tailwind count?
No, if the wind is outside the limit the ICF sets. The limit itself is not in the rules read for this page.
Can a world best be set at a national championship?
No. The list covers the Olympic Games, world championships, World Cups, multi-sport games and continental and regional championships.
Is there an under-23 world best?
No. Bests are recorded for juniors and seniors only.
Two crews set the same best time in different years. Who holds it?
Both. Boats with the same time hold the best jointly.
Why the rule exists
Flat water is never quite the same twice. A following wind, warm water or a current can take seconds off a 1000 metre race. Recording "bests" under stated conditions, and not records, is an honest label for times that depend partly on the day.
Where it differs
| Where | What changes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| ICF rules | World best times under the conditions above | SP 11.3 |
| Competitions without approved timing or wind measurement | Times are not official bests | SP 11.3.2 |
| Canoe slalom | No bests. Every course is different | R |
