How do boats qualify for a canoe sprint final?

By finishing position, heat by heat. When an event has more boats than lanes, heats are held. The first boats in each heat go straight on, a middle group gets another chance in a semi-final and the rest are out. With nine lanes, the final has nine boats. Bigger fields also get a B final and a C final.

How it works

  • When heats are needed: "If the number of entries in races up to and including 1000 meters is higher than the number of lanes".
  • Splitting the field: by drawing lots or by world ranking, into heats of equal size or with one boat more.
  • An example, 10 to 18 boats: two heats. The first three of each go to the final. The 4th to 7th and the faster 8th go to one semi-final. Its first three complete the final.
  • An example, 19 to 27 boats: three heats. Each winner goes to final A. The 2nd to 7th go to two semi-finals. From each, the first three go to final A and the next group to final B.
  • B and C finals: a B final only with more than 18 boats in the event, and a C final only with more than 36.
  • Lanes in a final: given by result or time in the semi-final.
  • Fixed crews: a crew that has qualified for a later round "must not be changed", except for illness or injury.
  • Those eliminated: ranked by their times in the last phase they completed.
  • If the event cannot be finished: the jury and chief official may rank on the times of the last completed phase.

The glossary has heats and finals and the lane.

Tricky cases

Does the fastest time in the heats guarantee a place in the final?

No, not by itself. Progress is mainly by finishing place in each heat. Time is used only for the last few places marked "by time" in the tables.

Is final B for medals?

No. Final B ranks the next group of boats, from tenth place down in a nine-lane event. The medals are decided in final A.

A K4 crew qualifies for the final and wants to bring in a fresh paddler. Is that allowed?

No, unless a member is ill or injured.

Are there heats in the 5000 metres?

No. For races of more than 1000 metres heats should not be held, and all boats start together.

Why the rule exists

Only nine boats fit on the water, so a big entry has to be thinned. Qualifying on place and not on time means every heat is a race in its own right, whatever the wind was doing in the others. The semi-final gives a second chance to a fast boat that drew a strong heat.
