What is canoe slalom, and what is the difference between a kayak and a canoe?
B · Beginner · The run · 1 of 5Canoe slalom is a race against the clock down a stretch of white water through a set of numbered gates. The rules put the aim in one line: to get down "without fault, in the shortest possible time". A kayak paddler sits and uses a paddle with two blades. A canoe paddler kneels and uses a paddle with one.
How it works
- The aim: "to negotiate a river defined by gates, without fault, in the shortest possible time".
- Kayaks: "decked boats, propelled by double bladed paddles. The athlete must be sitting inside the kayak."
- Canoes: "decked boats propelled by single-bladed paddles. The athlete must be kneeling inside the canoe."
- The individual events: men's kayak (MK1), women's kayak (WK1), men's canoe (MC1) and women's canoe (WC1), and the canoe doubles for men, women and mixed pairs.
- Kayak cross: men's and women's events in which four boats race together.
- Team events: three boats of the same class from one federation go down together.
- More than one: an athlete may enter more than one individual event.
- One at a time: in the individual events each boat runs the course alone, at intervals of at least 45 seconds.
The glossary has slalom racing, the kayak, the canoe, K1 and C1.
Tricky cases
Is a slalom canoe open on top like a touring canoe?
No. Both kinds of boat are decked. The difference is the paddle and whether the athlete sits or kneels.
Can the same athlete race kayak and canoe?
Yes. The rules allow an athlete to take part in more than one individual event.
Do the boats race each other on the water?
No, not in the canoe and kayak events. Each boat runs alone and the times are compared. Kayak cross is the head-to-head event.
Is the canoe double an Olympic event?
It depends on the Olympic programme, which the ICF board and the International Olympic Committee set. The rules list the doubles as events. The programme for a given Games is not in the rule book.
Why the rule exists
A river cannot be divided into lanes, so paddlers cannot race side by side and be compared fairly. Sending each down alone through the same gates, and adding time for every mistake, turns a stretch of rough water into a course that can be measured to a hundredth of a second.
Where it differs

|---|---|---|
| ICF rules | The events above | SL 4.1; SL 4.2 |
| Olympic Games | The programme is set with the International Olympic Committee | SL 12.3 |
| Canoe sprint | Flat water, lanes and boats racing side by side | ../sprint/ set |
