How long does a 3x3 team have to shoot?
B · Beginner · The game · 4 of 6Twelve seconds. The count starts when a player gains control of a live ball, when a check-ball is completed or when the conceding team picks the ball up after a basket. The shot must leave the hand before the signal and then go in or touch the ring. Failing is a violation and the other team gets a check-ball.
How it works
- The limit: a team must attempt a field goal within 12 seconds.
- When it starts: on gaining control of a live ball on court; when the check-ball is complete; after a basket, when the ball is in the hands of a player of the team that conceded.
- A valid attempt: the ball leaves the hand before the signal and then enters the basket or touches the ring.
- Signal with the ball in the air: if it goes in, the goal counts. If it touches the ring and stays out, play goes on. If it misses the ring, it is a violation, unless the other team gains clear control at once.
- New 12 seconds: when the ball touches the ring and any player gains control; when the other team is given a check-ball; after a foul or violation by the team without the ball.
- No reset: after a technical foul by the team with the ball, the clock continues from where it was.
- No clock on court: if a team is not trying to score, the referee warns it by counting the last five seconds aloud with an arm signal.
- Stalling: delaying or not actively trying to score is a violation.
The glossary has the shot clock and the violation.
Tricky cases
A shot hits the backboard and misses the ring as the signal sounds. Is it a violation?
Yes. The ball must enter the basket or touch the ring. The backboard does not count.
An attacker rebounds a shot that touched the ring. How long does the team have?
Twelve seconds. The clock resets when any player gains control after the ball touches the ring.
A defender knocks the ball out of bounds with 3 seconds left. Does the attacking team get 12 again?
It depends on a point the copy read for this page leaves unclear. A foul or violation by the team without the ball resets the clock to 12, and the same sentence makes an exception of the ball going out of bounds.
Is there a shot clock in a playground game?
No, not necessarily. Where there is no clock, the referee counts down the last five seconds.
Why the rule exists
A team that leads could pass the ball round three players until time ran out. Twelve seconds, half the five-a-side limit, forces a shot every few passes. It is the main reason a 10-minute game holds so many possessions.
