Checked 13 October 2026

The net is 1.55 metres high at the posts and 1.524 metres at the centre of the court. It is 760 mm deep and at least 6.1 metres wide, with a 75 mm white tape along the top. There must be no gap between the net and the posts.

How it works

  • Posts: 1.55 metres high, on the doubles side lines, staying vertical when the net is tight.
  • Top of the net: 1.524 metres at the centre and 1.55 metres over the doubles side lines.
  • Net: dark, fine cord, mesh of 15 to 20 mm, 760 mm deep, at least 6.1 metres wide.
  • A 75 mm white tape doubled over a cord or cable runs along the top.
  • No gaps between the ends of the net and the posts.

Tricky cases

Is the net the same height for singles and doubles?

Yes. Nothing about the net changes.

Why is the net lower in the middle?

It sags slightly under its own weight. The Laws fix both heights: 1.55 metres at the posts and 1.524 at the centre.

Why the rule exists

A fixed height makes the game the same everywhere. The white tape lets players and officials see the top of the net.
