What makes a serve legal in badminton?

B · Beginner · Serving · 4 of 8
Checked 13 October 2026

The serve must be hit with the whole shuttle below 1.15 metres from the floor, in one continuous forward movement, hitting the base of the shuttle first and without adding spin as it is released. Both of the server's feet stay on the floor, still, inside the service court. The shuttle must travel upwards over the net towards the diagonally opposite service court.

How it works

  • Server and receiver stand in diagonally opposite service courts, not touching the lines.
  • Some part of both feet of the server and the receiver stays on the floor, still, from the start of the serve until it is delivered.
  • The serve starts with the first forward movement of the racket head, and that movement must continue forward without stopping.
  • The server releases the shuttle without adding spin, and the racket hits the base of the shuttle first.
  • The whole shuttle is below 1.15 metres from the floor when hit.
  • The shuttle's flight is upwards from the racket, over the net, to land in the receiver's service court if not returned.
  • No undue delay once both players are ready. Pausing after the racket has been drawn back counts as a delay.
  • The server must not swing and miss.
  • The server cannot serve before the receiver is ready; a receiver who tries to return the serve counts as ready.

Tricky cases

Does the serve have to be below the waist?

No. Since the fixed-height rule, the test is 1.15 metres from the floor for every player, whatever their height.

Can the server lift a foot or step forward while serving?

No. Part of both feet must stay on the floor, still, until the shuttle is hit.

Is a spin serve legal?

No. The server must release the shuttle without adding spin.

The serve clipped the top of the net and landed in. Is it a let?

No. There is no service let for touching the net in badminton. If it lands in the correct service court, play goes on. If it gets caught in or on the net, it is a fault.

Why the rule exists

Without limits the serve would be an attacking shot hit downwards from close to the net. The height and upward-flight rules make the serve start the rally, not end it.
