Can you touch the net or reach over it in badminton?
B · Beginner · Rallies, faults and lets · 8 of 8No to both, with one exception. Touching the net or its posts with racket, body or clothing while the shuttle is in play is a fault. You must hit the shuttle on your own side, but your racket may follow through over the net after the hit.
How it works
- Touching the net or its supports with racket, person or dress during play: fault.
- The first contact with the shuttle must be on the striker's side of the net. After that, the racket may follow the shuttle over.
- Going under the net with racket or body is a fault only if it obstructs or distracts an opponent.
- Once the shuttle is not in play, for example after it has hit the floor, touching the net is no fault.
Tricky cases
I hit a winning smash and then fell into the net. Is it a fault?
It depends on timing. If the shuttle had already hit the floor, no. If it was still in play, yes.
My racket crossed the net after I hit the shuttle. Is that a fault?
No, as long as you first hit the shuttle on your own side and did not touch the net.
Can I block my opponent's shot by holding my racket at the net?
Yes, on your side. But if your opponent's racket is legally following the shuttle over the net and you prevent that stroke, it is obstruction.
Why the rule exists
The net is the boundary between the two sides. These rules stop a player taking the shuttle before it has crossed to them or interfering with play on the other side.
