Who decides the score of an arrow?
A · Advanced · Divisions, the field, officials and conduct · 3 of 5The archers call their own arrow values and the others on the target check them. If they disagree, a judge decides, and the judge's ruling on an arrow's value is final. Other rulings can be appealed in writing to a three-member jury of appeal.
How it works
- Scoring takes place after each end. Values are called in descending order and written on two scorecards, one of which may be electronic.
- Questions about an arrow must be put to a judge before any arrow is drawn.
- A mistake on the card may be corrected before the arrows are drawn if everyone on the target agrees and initials it.
- Scorer and archer both sign the card. The archer is responsible for their own card.
- If two paper cards differ on an arrow, the lower value stands.
- If a signed total is lower than the true total, the lower total stands. If it is higher, the true total is used.
- In finals shot in turn, the archers do not walk to the target. Each names an agent who checks the scores and pulls the arrows.
- The director of shooting controls timing and safety.
- Appeals: through the team manager, in writing with a fee, to the jury of appeal. A judge's decision on an arrow's value, and on a team-round yellow card, cannot be appealed.
Tricky cases
An archer signed for a total 2 points too low. Can it be corrected later?
No. The lower total on the scorecard is used.
Can a line call be appealed?
No. The judge's decision on the value of an arrow, made before it is drawn, is final.
Who writes the scores down?
A scorer for each target, who may be one of the archers shooting on it.
Why the rule exists
Archers scoring each other, with a judge only for disputes, lets a field of hundreds be scored at once. Making the archer answer for the card keeps everyone careful.
