How to qualify in Archery
How archers qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
India already has three archery places for Los Angeles 2028, all won at the Asian Games in Japan in September-October 2026:
- Compound mixed team (one man, one woman): Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Rajesh Jadhav won the final against Korea in a shoot-off. Compound archery makes its Olympic debut at LA28, in this one event.
- Recurve women (one place): the teenager Kumkum Anil Mohod won the individual gold, also in a shoot-off.
The places belong to India, not to the archers who won them: the Indian Olympic Association picks who uses them.
Archery at LA28 has 128 places, 64 men and 64 women, in six events: recurve individual and team for men and women, and recurve and compound mixed team. A country can have up to three recurve archers per gender (a full team) plus one compound archer per gender.
The biggest route is still ahead: the World Championships in Medellín, Colombia, in September 2027. India can still win a full recurve team of three (men and women) there, at the Asian Championships in November 2027 or at a final qualifier in 2028.
The places
| Men | Women | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quota places | 58 | 58 | 116 |
| Host country | 4 | 4 | 8 |
| Universality (recurve) | 2 | 2 | 4 |
| Total | 64 | 64 | 128 |
Per country and gender: up to three recurve archers if it has a recurve team (one if only individual), plus one compound archer for the compound mixed team.
The minimum score. Every archer, universality places included, must have shot a Minimum Qualification Score at a World Archery-registered event: recurve 650 (men) and 620 (women) on the 70m round; compound 690 (men) and 670 (women) on the 50m round.
The routes, per gender
Recurve team (three archers each, 7 teams):
| Route | Teams |
|---|---|
| World Championships 2027: top three teams | 3 |
| Continental championships for Europe, Asia and the Americas: the top team in each | 3 |
| Final world team qualifier, 2028: the winner | 1 |
Recurve mixed team (one man and one woman, 5 teams): the winner of each continental games (Asia, Europe, Africa, Americas, Oceania). At the Games themselves, the top 16 mixed teams from the ranking round, among countries with archers of both genders, shoot the mixed event.
Compound mixed team (11 teams):
| Route | Teams |
|---|---|
| World Championships 2027: top three | 3 |
| Continental games: the winner of each | 5 |
| Compound mixed team world ranking, published before the final qualifier: next two not qualified | 2 |
| Final world mixed team qualifier: the winner | 1 |
Recurve individual (21 places per gender):
| Route | Places |
|---|---|
| World Championships 2027: the three best archers from countries without a team place | 3 |
| Continental games for Asia, Europe and the Americas: the top two, from different countries | 6 |
| Continental qualification tournaments: Europe 3, Asia 2, Americas 2, Africa 2, Oceania 1 | 10 |
| Final world individual qualifier, 2028: top two | 2 |
A country can win only one individual place per gender at each continental games or tournament.

World Archery's tracker after the Games: China 2, India 3, Korea 2, Japan 1.
These places are officially confirmed only after the 2027 World Championships, because the document ranks the routes (below).
Which place counts first
World Archery applies the routes in this order: World Championships, continental games, continental qualifiers, world ranking, final qualifier. A team place always takes priority over an individual one, and a mixed team place over an individual place won at the same level. If a country later wins a full recurve team in a gender, its earlier individual place in that gender is passed on (for a continental games or mixed team place, to the next-ranked archer from the same continent whose country has not qualified).
The host country
The United States qualifies three recurve archers per gender and a compound mixed team, provided it enters three recurve archers per gender and a compound archer of each gender at the 2027 World Championships. With only one or two entered, it gets one individual place per gender. If the US wins the Pan American Games mixed team event, the runner-up takes the place.
Universality places
Four, in recurve, two per gender. The IOC invites requests on 1 October 2027 with a deadline of 15 January 2028; the Tripartite Commission decides before the final qualifier.
Places turned down
Unused places are reallocated using World Archery's world ranking after the final qualifier. Any left over become universality places.
