What equipment is banned in archery?

Officials' detail · Bows, arrows and equipment · 5 of 6
Checked 14 October 2026

Nothing electric or electronic may be attached to an archer's equipment, and headsets and voice devices are banned in front of the waiting line. Spotting scopes, binoculars, arm guards, chest guards, quivers and slings are allowed. Equipment that breaks the rules means disqualification.

How it works

Allowed in every division:

  • Arm guards, chest protectors, bow slings, finger slings, quivers.
  • Binoculars and scopes for spotting arrows, not for judging distance. A scope's top must be below the archer's armpit.
  • Prescription glasses, shooting glasses and sunglasses, without micro-hole lenses or aiming marks. The non-aiming eye may be covered.
  • A raised sole or foot support that sticks out no more than 2 cm beyond the shoe.
  • Non-electronic wind indicators such as a ribbon, for recurve and compound.
  • A phone or tablet, in front of the waiting line, only to plot arrow positions or photograph arrows and scorecards.
  • Fitness trackers and heart-rate bands that are not visually intrusive.

Not allowed:

  • Any electronic or electrical device attached to the equipment.
  • Electronic voice communication, headsets and noise-reduction devices in front of the waiting line.
  • Software that helps adjust the sight, anywhere on the field.
  • Camouflage patterns.

Inspection and penalty:

  • Judges inspect all equipment, spares included, the day before competition, and may spot-check at any time.
  • Using equipment that breaks the rules: disqualification and loss of any position gained.

Tricky cases

Can an archer use a phone on the shooting line?

It depends on what for. Plotting where arrows landed and photographing them is allowed. Voice communication and sight-adjustment software are not.

Can an archer listen to music through earphones while shooting?

No. Headsets and noise-reduction devices are not permitted in front of the waiting line.

Can a coach use a scope?

Yes. In team events the archers and coach share one spotting scope.

Why the rule exists

Archery is shot outdoors in wind, and reading it is part of the skill. The ban on electronics keeps that judgement with the archer.
