What happens when divers tie, when a competition is stopped or when a mark is disputed?

A · Advanced · The competition · 5 of 5
Checked 14 October 2026

Divers with the same total share the place. If a competition is interrupted it carries on from where it stopped, and the scores already made stand. If it cannot be finished, the result is based on the last complete round. A diver or team official may complain orally at once, and a formal protest may follow.

How it works

  • Ties: "When two or more divers score the same number of points, a tie shall be declared for that particular place."
  • Stopping: in unforeseen circumstances the referee may declare a short break, a postponement or a discontinuation. If possible the break comes after a full round.
  • Carrying on: "the competition shall be continued from where it was stopped". Points scored before the interruption are carried forward.
  • Not finished: "The final results must be based on the last complete round of dives." If the competition cannot be continued, the Jury of Appeal determines the result.
  • Wind: the referee may allow a restart without deduction in a strong wind.
  • An oral complaint: in diving, a competitor or responsible team official may complain orally straight after a dive, a round of dives or a section of the contest.
  • A formal protest: if the complaint is not accepted, a written protest may be made to the referee by the team leader, with a deposit of 500 Swiss francs, within 30 minutes of the end of the session.
  • Not on facts: no protest is allowed against a decision of fact.
  • Appeal: to the Jury of Appeal within one hour of a rejection. Its decision is final.
  • Marks kept in reserve: when the referee cancels or repeats a dive, the awards for the first dive are noted in case of a protest.

Tricky cases

A storm stops a final after three of six rounds, with one diver having already done a fourth dive. Which scores count if it cannot be resumed?

Those from the first three rounds. The result is based on the last complete round.

Can a diver protest that the judges marked a dive too low?

No, if that is a matter of the judges' opinion of what they saw. No protest is allowed against a decision of fact.

Is a tie for gold broken by the last dive?

No. A tie is declared for the place.

Why the rule exists

Much diving is outdoors, where wind and storms stop competitions. Keeping the scores and resuming avoids throwing away dives already done. Counting only complete rounds is the fair cut-off, because within a round every diver has done the same number of dives.
