What is artistic yogasana?
I · Intermediate · The artistic and rhythmic events · 3 of 5In the artistic single event one athlete performs ten asanas to music in 150 to 180 seconds, one from each of the ten sub-categories. Each asana is held for at least five seconds, and the moves between them are choreographed to the music. The score adds difficulty out of 100, artistry out of 20 and time out of 10.
How it works
- Name: Kalatmak Ekal Yogasana.
- Ten asanas: no more, chosen from the optional charts.
- One from each sub-category: a second asana from the same sub-category scores zero.
- Missing sub-categories: 5 marks for one, 10 for two and 15 for three. More than three means disqualification.
- Length: 150 to 180 seconds.
- Holds: at least five seconds for each asana.
- Transitions: artistic, and in time with the music.
- Floor: 8 metres by 8 metres.
- Facing: the athlete performs towards the chief judge.
- No early start: taking up an asana before the music starts is not allowed.
The glossary has the artistic yogasana single, the ten asanas, one from each sub-category, the minimum holding of an asana, the performance time, the use of floor and the namaste greeting.
Tricky cases
Can an athlete choose two hand balances that both bend forward?
No. Both would be from the same sub-category, and the second scores zero. A missing sub-category then costs 5 marks as well.
Does a harder routine have more than ten asanas?
No. Ten is the limit. An extra asana costs 5 marks, and a second extra one means disqualification.
Can an athlete be in the first posture when the music begins?
No. Pre-mounting an asana before the music starts is not allowed.
What is the highest possible score?
130, by the arithmetic: 100 from the D judges, 20 from the A judges and 10 from the T judges. The sample sheet in the rule book totals 88.3.
Why the rule exists
The traditional event tests how long and how still a posture can be held. This one tests range and flow: ten different kinds of asana in three minutes, joined so that the routine reads as one piece. Requiring one from every sub-category stops a specialist in backbends from showing nothing else.
