Fouls and penalties

  1. What is not allowed in Greco-Roman wrestling?Wrestling bans anything meant to hurt and not to control: striking, choking, twisting joints, bending an arm past 90 degrees and holds on the head alone.
  2. What is fleeing in wrestling?Openly refusing contact to stop the opponent's hold is fleeing a hold, and leaving the wrestling area to escape is fleeing the mat.
  3. How many cautions before a wrestler loses?A caution is the penalty for fleeing, illegal holds, negative wrestling and brutality, and it always gives the opponent at least 1 point.
  4. What happens when a wrestler is injured or bleeding? The referee stops the bout for an injury and a doctor decides whether the wrestler can go on.

Competition, officials and the mat

  1. Who are the officials in a wrestling bout?Three officials control each bout.
  2. What can a wrestling coach do during a bout? The coach stays at the foot of the platform or at least 2 metres from the mat and may speak only to the wrestler.
