What can a wrestling coach do during a bout?
A · Advanced · Competition, officials and the mat · 6 of 6The coach stays at the foot of the platform or at least 2 metres from the mat and may speak only to the wrestler. Water may be given only in the break. The coach also makes the challenge. A yellow card is a caution. A red card, or two yellows in one competition, removes them.
How it works
- The coach may not step on the mat, except in the break or when the doctor allows them to help with an injury.
- The coach may not try to influence decisions or insult the officials.
- In the break the coach must wipe the wrestler with a dry towel, and may give water. No other substance is allowed, in the break or during the bout.
- Up to two people may accompany the wrestler to the mat.
- Yellow card: Given by the mat chairman, at the referee's request or on the chairman's own initiative, for breaking these limits. A challenge made as a plain protest also earns one.
- Red card: If the coach persists. The coach is removed from the competition, and the team may bring in another coach.
- Two yellow cards in one competition, not necessarily in the same bout, have the same result as a red.
- A challenge must be made from the coach's seat.
Tricky cases
Can the coach go on to the mat to argue a call?
No. The way to dispute a call is the challenge, made from the seat.
Can a wrestler have a drink during a stoppage?
No. The coach may give water only during the break between periods.
Does a red card for the coach cost the wrestler the bout?
No. The rules remove the coach, and the team may use another one.
Why the rule exists
The bout belongs to the two wrestlers and the officials. Keeping the coach off the mat and limiting what they can say stops pressure on the referee from the corner.
