How the wheelchair rugby world ranking works

Checked 21 October 2026Valid for: the World Wheelchair Rugby (WWR) World Ranking List, under the WWR World Ranking Regulations in force from 1 July 2025 (the file saved is marked "draft", update of June 2025). Official source: worldwheelchair.rugby, rankings. Not covered: wheelchair rugby league, which has a separate ranking run by International Rugby League.

Wheelchair rugby ranks countries, not players. A team earns points for its final place at each event, and the points are multiplied by the event's weight:

EventMultiplier
World Championship5.0
Paralympic Games5.0
Zone championship (for example the Asia-Oceania championship)2.8 to 3.2
Other licensed eventsup to 1.8

The winner of an event gets 50 base points, second 45, third 40 and fourth 35, down to 1 point for 24th.

Results count for four years, losing value each year: full value for a year, then 75%, 50% and 25%.

The one thing to remember: in wheelchair rugby, a country's ranking is its places at the big events over four years, with the World Championship and the Paralympics counting most.

Base points by place

From 13th place the points fall by one each place: 12 for 13th down to 1 for 24th.

Zone championships are not reduced, because they can run across two years. The latest zone championship, World Championship and Paralympics always stay on the list, even if they fall outside the four years; but if a World Championship or Paralympics is cancelled, the points from the previous one expire that day.

Zone championship multipliers

Zone championshipMultiplier
More than one division, or more than nine countries3.2
With a regional qualification event, or more than five countries3.0
All others2.8

Other licensed events

Their multiplier is the sum of four parts, up to 1.8:

PartValues
Number of teams2 to 3: 0.1; 4 to 5: 0.2; 6 to 7: 0.3; 8 or more: 0.4
Number of zones1: 0; 2: 0.1; 3: 0.2
Classification paneltype B: 0.4; type A: 0.6
Technical officialsWWR-selected referees: 0.4; the full set of WWR-selected officials: 0.6

The rules' example: the Canada Cup 2024 had 6 teams from 3 zones, a type A panel and WWR referees: 0.3 + 0.2 + 0.6 + 0.4 = 1.5.

Series of events

When events form a series (a qualifier and the championship, or divisions of a zone championship), a country earns points once, for its final place across the whole series. A country that qualifies for its zone championship and does not go gets no points for that championship.

The rules' worked example: Brazil after Paris 2024
