How the wheelchair fencing world rankings work
Wheelchair fencers are ranked by points for their final place, multiplied by how important the competition was:
| Place | Points |
|---|---|
| 1st | 32 |
| 2nd | 26 |
| 3rd (both) | 20 |
| 5th to 8th | 14 |
| 9th to 16th | 8 |
| 17th to 32nd | 4 |
| Competition | Multiplier |
|---|---|
| Paralympic Games | × 3 |
| World Championships | × 2 |
| Zonal (continental) championships | × 1.2 |
| World Cup | × 1 |
| Satellite tournaments | × 0.3 |
| Sub-regional championships or games | × 0.1 |
A Paralympic gold is therefore worth 96 points; a World Cup gold 32.
Results last two years, at full value the whole time (no fading).
Which results count (senior individual)
- The best six World Cup results;
- the best three satellite tournament results;
- the latest World Championships or Paralympic Games;
- the latest zonal championships;
- the best sub-regional competition or games result.
A competition in the current season replaces the same one from two seasons before; any result drops out at the latest on its second anniversary. Points are given only in the category (A, B or C) and weapon the fencer competed in.
Full points scale
| Place | Points |
|---|---|
| 1 | 32 |
| 2 | 26 |
| 3 (both) | 20 |
| 4 (if a bronze bout is fenced) | 18 |
| 5 to 8 | 14 |
| 5 to 6 (with repechage) | 14 |
| 7 to 8 (with repechage) | 12 |
| 9 to 16 | 8 |
| 9 to 12 (with repechage) | 8 |
| 13 to 16 (with repechage) | 6 |
| 17 to 32 | 4 |
| 33 to 64 | 2 |
| 65 to 96 | 1 |
At the Paralympic Games, 4th place gets 54 points (18 × 3).
Ties: most first places, then most second places and so on; if still level, the fencers share the place.
The ranking is kept up to date after every counting competition and decides seedings and exemptions.
U17 and U23 rankings
All U17 or U23 World Cup results count, plus the World Championships, zonal championships and all satellite results in that age group.
Team ranking
The best six team World Cup results, the latest World Championships or Paralympics, the latest zonal championships and the best sub-regional result. Points: 64 for 1st, 52, 40, 36, 32, 30, 28, 26, 25, then one less a place to 18 for 16th; 8 for 17th to 32nd. The same multipliers apply.
A worked example
Made up to show the arithmetic. An Indian category A épée fencer's results: Asian (zonal) Championships bronze (20 × 1.2 = 24), two World Cup quarter-finals (14 + 14 = 28), a satellite win (32 × 0.3 = 9.6) and a last-16 finish at the World Championships (8 × 2 = 16). Total: 24 + 28 + 9.6 + 16 = 77.6.
Points to check
- o.109 refers to "the official IWF individual ranking (cf. o.108)"; the rest of the document says WF.
- The rules do not name which events are "zonal championships" and which are "sub-regional games". If the Asian Para Games counts as sub-regional games, its points are multiplied by only 0.1; if it counts as the zonal championship, by 1.2. Confirm with World Para Fencing.
