How many players are in a volleyball team?
Officials' detail · The court, the net, the ball, the team and beach volleyball · 4 of 4A volleyball team has six players on court and up to twelve in the squad for a match. Shirts are numbered, and the captain's has a stripe under the number. Only the game captain may speak to the referees, and the coach directs the team from outside the court.
How it works
- Up to 12 players for a match, with a coach, up to two assistant coaches, a therapist and a doctor. At FIVB senior competitions up to 14 players may be listed.
- Six on court at all times.
- Uniform: shirt, shorts, socks and sports shoes, the same colour and design for the team except the liberos.
- Numbers 1 to 20, on the front and back: at least 15 cm high on the chest and 20 cm on the back.
- The team captain has a stripe of 8 × 2 cm under the chest number.
- Forbidden: anything that could cause injury or give an artificial advantage. Glasses and lenses are at the player's own risk. Padded protection is allowed.
- The first referee may allow players to play barefoot, to change a wet or damaged shirt or to wear training suits in the cold.
- Game captain: when the team captain is off court, another player on court is named. Only the game captain speaks to the referees, when the ball is out of play.
- Coach: chooses the line-up, asks for time-outs and substitutions and may stand or walk in the free zone in front of the bench, from the attack line back, to give instructions.
Tricky cases
Can the coach stand during play?
Yes. The coach may stand or walk in the free zone in front of the team bench, behind the line of the attack line, without disturbing or delaying the match.
Can players wear jewellery?
It depends on the referees. The rules forbid objects that may cause injury or give an artificial advantage and name no items.
Why the rule exists
Numbers let the scorer track the rotation and the substitutions. One voice to the referees keeps a six-a-side game from turning into a six-a-side argument.
