Can you touch the net or go under it in beach volleyball?
I · Intermediate · Playing the ball, attacking and blocking · 5 of 6Touching the net between the antennae while playing the ball is a fault. There is no centre line on the beach, so a player may go under the net into the opponents' side as long as they do not interfere with the opponents' play. The ball may touch the net as it crosses.
How it works
Net:
- Net contact between the antennae, or with an antenna, during the action of playing the ball is a fault. That action runs from take-off through the hit or attempt to a safe landing.
- Also faults: using the net as a support, gaining an unfair advantage by touching it, hindering an opponent's attempt to play the ball, and holding the net.
- Not faults: touching the posts, the ropes or the net outside the antennae without interfering; the ball driving the net into a player.
Ball:
- It must cross between the antennae and may touch the net.
- A ball hit into the net may be played out of it within the team's hits.
- If the ball tears the net or brings it down, the rally is replayed.
Under and beyond the net:
- A player may enter the opponents' space, court or free zone if this does not interfere with their play.
- A player may go into the opponents' court to play a ball before it passes outside the crossing space or wholly under the net.
- Touching an opponent or the ball in the opponents' space before or during their attack hit is a fault.
Tricky cases
A player ran under the net and bumped an opponent who was about to play the ball. Is it a fault?
Yes. Entering the opponents' side is allowed only if it does not interfere with their play.
A player's foot slid under the net but touched nobody. Is it a fault?
No. There is no centre line, and no interference.
Why the rule exists
Sand makes it hard to stop at the net, so the test is interference, not a line on the ground. The net itself is still off limits while playing the ball.
