How to qualify in Tug of war
How teams qualify for the Tug of War World Championships
Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: the 2026 TWIF World Outdoor Tug of War Championships, Mossel Bay, South Africa, from the TWIF invitation letter of 2 April 2026. Not covered: the TWIF rulebook (weight classes, team size; not saved); the indoor championships; the World Games.
There is no qualifying round. Every TWIF member association in good standing is invited to send its national teams. A weight class becomes an official World Championship only if at least four teams enter it.
The 2026 outdoor championships had two parts:
| Event | Who | Dates |
|---|---|---|
| World Championships (closed: national teams only) | national teams | 18 and 19 September 2026 |
| Open Clubs competition | club teams | 16 and 17 September 2026 |
National team entries closed on 31 July 2026; club entries on 8 September.
For India, the route is entry by the national association, if it is a TWIF member in good standing.
- Teams pull in weight classes (the team's total weight), so each class needs its own four entries. Which classes counted was confirmed in early August 2026.
- Weigh-ins were held on fixed days only (Tuesday, and one extra session on Thursday on request two weeks ahead).
