How does a triathlon start, and what happens after a false start?
I · Intermediate · The race and the swim · 1 of 4Usually with a mass start: everyone goes on one horn. If several athletes go early, the start is called back and run again. If only a few go early, the race continues and those athletes serve a time penalty in the first transition. Age-group races often start in waves.
How it works
- Mass start: "a large group of athletes are starting together".
- The announcement: "Athletes, you are now in the hands of the starter", not later than 20 seconds before the start.
- Stay put: athletes must remain in their starting position after it.
- A heartbeat: a heartbeat soundtrack may play for up to 15 seconds and fade out.
- The horn: three to five seconds after the fade, the start is given "by blasting a horn".
- Straight ahead: athletes go directly forward to the water. Moving to a different start position is not permitted.
- False start: where several athletes move before the horn, the horn is sounded many times and everyone returns to their positions.
- Early starters: if only a few go early, the head referee may let the race continue "with penalties given to the early starters".
- The penalty: a time penalty served in the first transition.
- Waves: age-group fields may start in separate waves. Starting in a wave before your own means disqualification.
- Other systems: interval, time-trial and rolling starts are also provided for.
The glossary has the mass start, the early start entry, the time penalty, the transition, the open water swim and the technical official.
Tricky cases
One athlete dives a fraction before the horn and the rest go on it. Is the race restarted?
Not necessarily. The head referee can declare the start valid and give the early starter a time penalty in the first transition.
How long is the early-start penalty?
The same as for other ordinary infringements: 10 seconds in a sprint and 15 in a standard-distance race.
An age-group athlete misses their wave. Can they start with the next one?
Only with the start official's approval, and their time still runs from their assigned wave.
In a mixed relay, who serves an early-start penalty?
The first athlete of the team, in the first transition.
Why the rule exists
A swim start with dozens of athletes cannot be recalled easily once they are in the water, so the rules give the referee two tools: call it back if many went, or let it run and penalise the few. The penalty in transition takes away more than the head start gained.
