Can you touch the net in tennis?
I · Intermediate · How is a point won or lost? · 5 of 8Not while the ball is in play. If a player, their racket, their clothing or anything they carry touches the net, the posts or the opponent's side of the court during the point, they lose the point. Once the ball is dead, touching the net costs nothing.
How it works
- The net, net posts, singles sticks, cord, strap and band all count.
- The racket counts whether it is in the player's hand or not.
- Touching the opponent's court during the point also loses it.
- Crossing the imaginary line of the net beside the court is allowed, as long as the player does not touch the opponent's court.
- The ball is in play from the serve until the point is decided, for example by a second bounce or the ball landing out.
Tricky cases
I hit a winner and my momentum carried me into the net. Is it my point?
It depends on timing. If the ball had already bounced twice or landed out, yes. If it was still in play, you lose the point.
In doubles, my partner touched the net while I was hitting. Do we lose the point?
Yes. Either partner touching the net while the ball is in play loses the point.
Can I jump over the net during a point?
No. A player who goes into the opponent's court while the ball is in play loses the point.
Why the rule exists
The net divides the two sides. A player who cannot stop before it has gained ground they were not entitled to.
