How does a surfing competition heat work?

B · Beginner · The heat and the score · 1 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

A small group of surfers, usually two to four, share the waves for a set time between 15 and 45 minutes. Each may ride many waves, but only their two highest-scoring rides count. One horn blast starts the heat and two end it. The surfers wear coloured vests so the judges can tell them apart.

How it works

  • Best two: "All Heats including Finals will total the best 2 waves".
  • Wave limit: "a maximum of up to 25 waves ridden by each surfer", as decided by the contest director.
  • Length: "a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of up to 45 minutes".
  • The horn: "One blast to start and two blasts to finish."
  • The disc: a large coloured square on the beach. "Green to start and yellow for the last 5 minutes."
  • Five minutes: a visual and public-address warning is given when five minutes remain.
  • Countdown: the commentator counts down five seconds at the start and at the end.
  • No extensions: "Under no circumstances will there be any time extensions once a heat has begun."
  • Vests: each surfer wears a coloured contest vest, and is responsible for wearing the right colour.
  • Told beforehand: the beach marshal tells each surfer the wave limit, the number of waves counted and the heat length.
  • Counting: it is the surfer's responsibility to keep track of their own wave count.
  • The winner: the surfer with the highest heat total. The top finishers advance.

The glossary has the heat, the score, the wave, the lineup, the wave selection entry and the judges.

Tricky cases

A surfer rides ten waves and another rides three. Does the busier surfer have an advantage?

Only in chances. Each surfer's total is their best two rides, however many they caught.

No good waves come for the first ten minutes. Is the heat extended?

No. There are no time extensions. If nobody has ridden a wave after 10 minutes in a heat of 30 minutes or less, the head judge may continue, restart or postpone it.

A surfer puts on the wrong coloured vest. What happens?

They have no right to protest if the judges could not tell their rides from the others'.

How many surfers are in a heat at the Olympic Games?

That is set by the Olympic competition format, which was not read. The ISA rules provide priority systems for heats of two to five surfers.

Why the rule exists

The sea does not deliver equal waves on demand, so surfing cannot give everyone the same number of attempts. A time window with a best-two total is the answer: every surfer has the same minutes and must choose which waves to spend them on. Counting two waves rewards more than one lucky ride.
