How to qualify in Squash
How squash players qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
Squash makes its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, with a men's and a women's singles of 16 players each.
Asia's places are already taken. The singles winners at the 2026 Asian Games won them: Ng Eain Yow and Sivasangari Subramaniam, both of Malaysia. India's Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh lost the finals, so India has no place yet. Each winner still has to be in the top 50 of the world ranking on 22 May 2028.
Indian players now have three ways in:
- The PSA world ranking of 22 May 2028: eight places per gender. Most players need to be in the top 50 to be eligible at all.
- A Final World Qualifying Tournament in June 2028: the last place per gender, for countries still without one.
- Two players per country are possible only for the two countries whose second-best players rank highest.
The other continents' winners (Africa, Europe, the Americas and Oceania, all in 2027) take one place each, and the United States as host is guaranteed one player per gender.
The places
| Men | Women | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Continental games winners | 5 | 5 | 10 |
| Host country | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| PSA world ranking | 8 | 8 | 16 |
| Universality | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Final World Qualifying Tournament | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Total | 16 | 16 | 32 |
Per country: one player per gender as a rule; two at most, for the countries described below. Places go to the player by name.
Who can play: a player must be in the top 50 of the PSA World Rankings on 22 May 2028, except through the last ranking step (D.3.4), the universality place (top 75) or the Final World Qualifying Tournament.
Route 1: continental games (5 places per gender)
| Continent | Event | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Asia | Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya | 19 September to 4 October 2026 (done) |
| Europe | European Games, Istanbul | 22 to 26 June 2027 |
| Africa | African qualifying tournament (to be confirmed) | 17 to 21 August 2027 |
| Americas | Pan American Games, Lima | 23 July to 8 August 2027 |
| Oceania | Pacific Games, Tahiti | 24 July to 8 August 2027 |
The winner takes the place, confirmed only on 22 May 2028. A winner outside the top 50 then loses it to the next eligible player from that event. A continental winner takes priority over a higher-ranked player from their own country.
Asia, 2026:
| Gold (place) | Silver | |
|---|---|---|
| Men | Ng Eain Yow (Malaysia) | Abhay Singh (India) |
| Women | Sivasangari Subramaniam (Malaysia) | Anahat Singh (India) |
Route 2: the host country (1 per gender)
The United States gets one place per gender if its player is in the top 50. It can win a second through the ranking. Without a top-50 player it can still enter the Final World Qualifying Tournament.
Route 3: the PSA World Rankings of 22 May 2028 (8 per gender)
No country may have more than two players per gender, counting places already won.
- Two countries get two players: those whose second-best players are ranked highest.
- The other places go down the ranking, one per country.
- If the eight cannot be filled from the top 50, a third country may get a second player (if top 50).
- If places are still left, they go to the best-ranked players from countries not yet in, even outside the top 50.
See the squash ranking page for how the PSA ranking works.
Route 4: universality (1 per gender)
For a player in the top 75. The IOC invites requests on 1 October 2027, with a deadline of 15 January 2028. An unused place goes to the next player on the ranking.
Route 5: Final World Qualifying Tournament (1 per gender)
6 to 10 June 2028. The draw is the best-ranked player from each of the next 24 countries without a place. The winner qualifies.
Places turned down
| Place | Goes to |
|---|---|
| Continental | The next eligible player at that event; then the next from that continent on the ranking; then the next on the ranking |
| Host or universality | The next on the ranking |
| Withdrawal from a country with two places | Decided again by the "second players" rule |
| Withdrawal from a country with one place | The country's next-best player, if top 50; otherwise the next at the Final World Qualifying Tournament |
